Reconciling accounting with social justice

Demonstrating outside Leinster HouseThe National Women’s Council of Ireland has launched a hard hitting campaign, Women say ‘No going back’, highlighting the fact that although successive Governments have paid lip-service to women’s participation in decision making, and made promises to tackle poverty and disadvantage, there has been poor progress to date.

Now the McCarthy Report is recommending cuts to services which particularly affect women – education, health, childcare, community supports such as meals on wheels and home help.  All areas where women contribute through their paid and un-paid work.  If and when the cuts start, will women be expected to pick up the pieces?

The task facing decision makers coming up to the next Budget  is, to quote the Louisburgh Community project ‘’…… to reconcile accounting with social justice”.
