Book Review: A Woman in Berlin, an account of mass rape during the fall of the capital to the Soviet army

Writing in the Guardian, Linda Grant, reviews the novel ‘A Woman in Berlin’, which she describes as ‘a shocking account of mass rape during the fall of the German capital’. Grant was involved in researching accounts of mass rape during the Yugoslav War.

A Woman in Berlin’, is a powerful account of one woman’s experience in Berlin when the Soviet troops took over the city in 1945. Although the subject matter is harrowing, the author is an accomplished writer and keen observer of human nature, Direct and without a shred of self pity this true personal story of mass rape and the impact of war is compelling, one of the best books I have ever read.
