City Planners give the go-ahead to demolish the old Legion Hall and build on green space in Killester.

My thanks to Fionuala Lennon for these photographs of the old hall and green at Middle Third and Abbeyfield in Killester.  Taken during the big freeze in January, the photographs show the proposed location for a commercial crèche, granted planning permission by Dublin City Council late last December.

The development involves demolishing the old Legion  Hall, known locally as the Judo Hall, and the loss of considerable green open space.   The astonishing aspect of this planning decision is that the area is zoned amenity, we have adequate childcare in Killester, and a similar application was turned down earlier last year.  Another feature of this area is that there are established rights of way across the green space.

The green was designed in the 1920s as part of the Demesne, Middle Third and Abbeyfield scheme to house ex army service-men and their families.  For some reason in the early 1960’s the Hall and sourounding area passed into private ownership.

The local Labour Party organised two information meetings on the issue, and following these discussions, Cllr. Aodhán Ó Ríordáin  and myself lodged an appeal to An Bord Pléanala supporting the Killester Garden Village and local residents’ appeal.  See Dublin City Council for more information, reference planning application number 4182/09.
